Senior Advisor to the Department of Energy

Steve Chalk joined ProVets Consulting Group in 2022 and currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the Department of Energy (DOE) for implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Steve possesses expertise in clean energy technologies and policies to address energy security, climate change and U.S. manufacturing competitiveness challenges. In his current role, he also provides strategic planning and advice for decarbonizing the electricity, transportation, industrial and buildings sectors.

From 2019 to 2022, Steve served as Vice President of Strategic Marketing Innovations (SMI) where he provided Federal marketing services to clean energy technology companies and helped them capture non-dilutive research and development funds for defense and commercial applications. At SMI, he also consulted with national research laboratories and early-stage investors on clean energy strategies. 

From 1990-2019, Steve served in several leadership positions at DOE where he was the Deputy Assistant Secretary overseeing energy efficiency, renewable power and sustainable transportation technology development programs. Steve also served as Acting DOE Assistant Secretary for two presidential transitions and as the Chief Operating Officer for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Earlier in his career, Steve led DOE’s national hydrogen initiative and managed development of a light water reactor tritium target rod. Steve began his career developing solid rocket propellants and explosives for the Navy. 

For his executive leadership, Steve received three Presidential Rank Awards and he was awarded the Science and Environment medal by the Partnership for Public Service. Steve holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland and a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the George Washington University.
